GMG’s James Sofronas to Debut Audi R8 LMS GT2 in Barcelona
Continuing a tradition that dates back to 2012 and the debut of the first-generation Audi R8 GT3 in North America, Global Motorsports Group (GMG Racing) president and founder James Sofronas will head to Barcelona, Spain in one month’s time to debut the all-new Audi R8 LMS GT2. Working in partnership with the renowned WRT team as well as Audi Sport customer racing, Sofronas will put his long history with the marque to good use as they all gain valuable information on the new contender.
“This is an amazing opportunity and I couldn’t be more appreciative of everyone at Audi Sport customer racing,” stated Sofronas. “The new Audi R8 LMS GT2 promises to be a really strong machine, and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a great circuit to see how it performs. Overall the new GT2 platform is one we are strongly behind, it’s a fantastic concept for sportsman drivers to drive some thrilling vehicles. I look forward to working with a team of WRT’s heritage combined with my own background and the support behind Audi Sport customer racing, it should be a great event.”
Joining alongside James on this endeavor will be GMG’s Logistics Director Joe Foster, who has been an integral part of the team for many years and is looking forward to a newly created role that places an emphasis on Customer Racing.
“I’m using this trip as a learning experience for sure,” stated Foster. “The operation of WRT is world renown and I want to continue to elevate our programs in the US and Worldwide in the next few years and beyond.”
With the new GT2 category aimed at combining gentleman drivers with some of the fastest GT cars in the scene, the new Audi R8 LMS GT2 reflects Audi’s commitment to the division. Boasting 640+ hp and built off of a similar base as the GT3 and GT4 platforms, the heritage of the R8 will be will be well reflected in the latest machine, though with an impressive boost in straight line speed.
Developed by Audi Sport customer racing, Sofronas will drive with the prestigious WRT team as part of the debut. Based in Belgium, WRT is one of the most noted teams in the European scene, winning not only the Blancpain GT Championship, but also multiple victories at the 24 Hours of Spa, as well as winning at the 24 Hours of Nüburgring.
Sofronas will join the event as no stranger to success with Audi. In 2013, the Villa Park, California resident took the Audi R8 LMS GT3 to multiple victories including the Grand Prix of Long Beach, narrowly missing the first-ever championship in North America for the brand. Five years later he would make good on a similar effort, taking the debut win for the Audi R8 LMS GT4 in North America, then backing it up with three championships in the former World Challenge series.
The event is slated at for September 27-29, taking place at the prestigious Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Catalonia, Spain.
