GMG Racing, Washington and Sargent Deliver Season-Best GT3 Results at Barber Motorsports Park
GMG Racing, Washington and Sargent Post Best SRO America GT3 Weekend of The Year at Barber Motorsports Park in the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R
GMG Racing and team drivers Kyle Washington and Tom Sargent combined for a season-best three GT3 podium finishes in four race starts Saturday and Sunday in the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R at the SRO America race weekend at Barber Motorsports Park. The strong showing included the No. 32 team’s first GT World Challenge America powered by AWS double-podium finish that was capped by a race-leading performance from the pole and near-victory in Sunday’s second and final 90-minute race of the weekend on the 2.38-mile Alabama road course.
“I am so proud of Kyle, Tom and the entire GMG Racing team for once again showing up with and delivering the top performance for a Porsche 911 GT3 R this weekend,” said GMG Racing Founder and Team Principal James Sofronas. “Through Thursday’s test, Friday practice and Saturday qualifying, when Tom stepped up big for the Pro-Am pole for Sunday’s race, we were among the fastest if not the fastest car this weekend at Barber. The pace continued into the weekend’s races, which culminated with Kyle and Tom leading the most race laps in nearly scoring the class victory. We are peaking at the right time and can’t wait for the 8-hour season-ending race in Indianapolis in October.”
Sunday’s GT World Challenge race joins last year’s victory at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) as the best races to date for Washington and Sargent, who are in their second season together as GMG Racing co-drivers. Sargent led every lap of his race-opening stint from the pole with Washington capably holding the point for the majority of his race-ending run in the No. 32. The duo combined to lead 58 of 90-minute race’s 65 laps, including eight laps in the overall lead when both Sargent and Washington each had a chance to pace the entire field before and after GMG Racing’s perfectly executed driver change pit stop.
“We are looking forward to the finale in Indianapolis but we’re going to enjoy this one. Barber’s a beautiful place, a great track and Tom gave me a hell of a lead in Sunday’s race. So, I had to do something with it and we fought to the end. Blake McDonald got by me clean at the end, we have raced together so many times, and he even did a few races with us at GMG, so a good competitor and guy we know real well. From our engineers all the way to every crew guy and tire specialist, everyone is just clicking as a team right now for sure.”
Sargent proved all weekend why he was named to Porsche Motorsport North America’s prestigious Porsche Selected Driver program this past April.
“The team has really, really let us put on the show this year,” Sargent said. “They are doing a great job, and we are consistently the fastest Porsche by far. For sure, we had the fastest car here, and the Porsche was the right car at the right track this weekend. We stayed in the lead in Pro-Am Sunday for well over an hour and almost brought it home. Kyle drove great, really well with no mistakes, and that was what really counted.”
Sunday’s near-victory was preceded by a third-place GT World Challenge America Pro-Am finish on Saturday by Washington and Sargent.
Washington also hit the podium again in the single driver GT America powered by AWS on Saturday in the same No. 32 Porsche he and Sargent shared in World Challenge.
His third place finish was Washington’s 10th top-three GT America showing of the year. The strong record now includes at least one podium result on each of the seven doubleheader weekends spanning the year’s first 14 races. The stout and steady run in the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R has Washington ranked second in the GT America driver championship standings going into October’s season-ending Indianapolis 8 Hour at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Washington’s podium success in GT America is highlighted by victories at Sonoma Raceway, COTA and Sebring International Raceway along with three second-place finishes and four third-place showings. The most recent trip to victory lane prior to Barber’s result on Saturday was a third-place finish one race prior in Saturday’s opening sprint at Road America.
Next up for GMG Racing in SRO America competition is the season-ending Indianapolis 8 Hour, October 16 – 19, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
