GMG Racing Targets Montreal Podiums with Dual Porsche Entries at the Canadian Grand Prix

Fresh off a commanding double-podium performance at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, GMG Racing arrives at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this weekend with momentum, fielding a pair of Pro-Am class Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entries in IMSA Porsche Carrera Cup North America. First-year competitor Patrick Mulcahy and veteran team principal James Sofronas are set to contest the series’ F1-support doubleheader during the Canadian Grand Prix.

Mulcahy, making his Montreal debut in the No. 54 GMG Racing Porsche, is chasing his first Carrera Cup podium. Sofronas returns to the circuit looking to defend his 2023 rain-soaked win and extend his historic record as the first Carrera Cup driver to notch victories at all three F1-hosted North American events: Miami, Montreal, and Circuit of The Americas.

“I am very grateful for the Formula 1 race weekend victories we have worked hard to achieve with the incredible GMG Racing crew,” said Sofronas, who has four F1-weekend Pro-Am wins. “At this stage of my career, any race win means a lot, especially with our team that we’ve built over more than two decades. But first and foremost, my own competition takes a backseat to our clients. Our goal in Montreal is to get Patrick his first podium—he’s absolutely ready for it.”

Mulcahy opened the season with a fourth-place finish at Sebring and scored another top-five in Miami, briefly running in podium position before finishing fifth.

“Racing at the Canadian Grand Prix alongside Formula 1 is an incredible honor,” Mulcahy said. “The energy is electric, and the level of competition in Carrera Cup is unmatched. This is the kind of stage where I thrive.”

Sofronas added,

“People forget Patrick’s a first-year Carrera Cup driver. He’s been battling up front since Round 1. We’ve spent the last month refining his entire program—driver development, technical setup, everything. Montreal is where we expect to see that work pay off.”

Sofronas currently sits third in the Pro-Am championship standings with 69 points—just five behind second and 13 off the lead. The Montreal doubleheader marks the start of Carrera Cup’s six-weekend second half.

Practice sessions began Friday, with qualifying and Race 1 set for Saturday, June 14 at 6:05 p.m. EDT. Race 2 goes green Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EDT. Both races stream live on IMSA TV, the Porsche Motorsport North America YouTube channel, and NBC’s Peacock.
