GMG Looks to End Season on a High
Following a strong start to the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge season that saw Global Motorsports Group (GMG) take a string of podium finishes as well as victory, the team will head to this weekend’s Nissan Championship Finale at Miller Motorsports Park in search of closing their season on a high.
“We definitely want to create momentum for the off-season,” stated team owner and driver James Sofronas. “The Pirelli World Challenge has become so incredibly competitive that you simply have to be perfect every time, and I believe we’re as prepared as ever.”
Heading the championship standings for the team is 20-year-old Andrew Palmer, who will be completing his first-ever full season of professional competition. In a season that has featured highlights including taking a podium at his first race and winning in only his third, the desire to end his season strong is at a premium for the Pomona College student. Having only driven in his first car race one year ago, it’s been an impressive year for Palmer and his No viagra preisvergleich. 21 Spyder / The Thermal Club Audi R8 LMS ultra.
“We really want to end the season the way we started,” stated Palmer. “The experience of my first Pirelli World Challenge season has been incredible, and I’ve learned so much. Everyone on the team has been tremendous in guiding me and helping me learn the ropes, and hopefully we can put all of that to good use for this final weekend. We should be strong here and I’ve done all I can to study for it, now we’ll just see what happens on Friday and Saturday.”
Sitting sixth in the championship, Sofronas and the No. 14 Spyder / Mobil 1 / The Thermal Club Audi R8 LMS ultra will also be looking to end the season strong. In a season in which consistency has reigned supreme for the California resident who has finished each race this season in the top-10, all focus will be on aiming for his first podium of the season. At this point one year ago, Sofronas came in to the finale in an incredibly tight championship fight with the Cadillac of Johnny O’Connell, resulting in a heartbreaking final race fraught with challenges. One year later, the team owner is hoping to end his season with the momentum of a job well done.
“Everyone on this team has worked so hard this season, we definitely owe them a podium,” stated Sofronas. “Miller is such an interesting track to drive, and hopefully our experience will prove well there. We’ve been working hard to try and find some new areas to go faster, and heading in to the final weekend I think we’ll be prepared to capitalize. The goal for us this weekend is simple: finish strong and help Audi secure the highly coveted Manufacturer’s Championship.”
Finally, returning in the series’ GT-A category will be veteran Alex Welch. Driving the No. 76 Prestige Imports / Morgan Adams Foundation machine, Welch returned to the series just six weeks ago in Ohio. Racing on a weekend that featured wild weather, the Colorado native demonstrated remarkable patience throughout both races, garnering a top five in the process. This weekend, Alex looks to end a season that has included races at Daytona and Sebring with a podium in Utah.
“The GT-A category has been an interesting prospect to compete in, and I’m hoping for a good showing in Utah,” stated Welch. “It’s great to get back behind the wheel, and the track at Miller should provide some great action. I know everyone on the team has been preparing to finish strong, let’s hope it all comes together.”
Running as another double-header weekend, the team will take to race action this Friday, September 12, at 4:50PM, with the second event taking place one day later at 2:15PM.
