GMG Returns To Second Home At Lime Rock

SANTA ANA, Calif. (June 30, 2013)- Following a four-week break from action in the Pirelli World Championship, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) returns to their “second home” during next weekend’s Northeastern Grand Prix at the famed Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut. While previous rounds have seen the team running multiple cars in both the series’ GT and GTS categories, Lime Rock will see the team consolidating to GT only, with team regular Bill Ziegler making the move to the Audi R8 LMS. Despite Ziegler’s lack of testing in the car, GMG’s philosophy of complete data sharing among all cars, as well as driver coaching, should serve the Floridian well.

“We’re very happy to see Bill make the move to our Audi R8 LMS program,” stated team owner James Sofronas. “He has so much experience in this series that his input into the Audi program will be extremely valuable, and similarly we look forward to sharing our data with him to get him up to speed as quickly as possible. We were enjoying the development program in GTS with the No. 95, but I think ultimately everyone here realized what a better opportunity existed with our Audi program.”

For Sofronas, racing the No. 14 Mobil 1 / Children’s Tumor Foundation Audi R8 LMS at Lime Rock is somewhat of a homecoming for the driver and team owner. Originally from nearby Pound Ridge, New York, many of James’ early career highlights came from the circuit. From running some of his first ever races at Lime Rock, to taking his first professional podium there, heading to his “original home track” as the Pirelli World Challenge GT point leader is a special feeling. Having gone to school just two hours away in Babson College, many of James’ fellow alumni will be cheering him on.

“Lime Rock has so many special memories for me,” stated Sofronas. “From being the place that really gave me the racing bug, to taking my first big podium, it’s great to return home. I still have many friends and family there who come out for this one, so it’s always a special event where we want to show well.”

Also in search of showing well, Duncan Ende heads to Lime Rock in strong contention for his first podium. During his last visit to a permanent road course in Austin, Duncan’s No. 24 STANDD / Merchant Services, Ltd. Audi R8 LMS showed particularly well. In both Austin rounds, the Los Angeles native was within the top three before running into bad luck. Pulling double duty this weekend with both the Pirelli World Challenge and the American Le Mans Series, Ende hopes to finally come home with some hardware.

“It would be really nice to break through to the podium,” stated the Californian. “We’ve been so close in every round, it’s just a matter of everything finally coming together. Lime Rock has a lot of great memories for me and it’s a track I have a lot of experience at, so I’m hoping all this will translate into good results.”

Heading to Lime Rock for his GT debut in 2013, Bill Ziegler looks forward to debuting the No. 95 Swisher Racing Audi R8 LMS. Having moved on from the GTS Pontiac program after Detroit, the Florida native hopes that his years of experience at Lime Rock will overcome his limited time with the Audi.

“It should be an interesting experience for sure,” stated Ziegler. “The success of GMG’s Audi program speaks for itself, so there’s no doubt I’ll have a great car with a great team. Admittedly, I haven’t had much time in the car so it’s hard to say just what to expect, but luckily Lime Rock is a track I know very well. I really appreciate the team getting everything ready for me and hopefully it will be a great debut.”

Rounding out the lineup will be Alex Welch, returning to the team after skipping the Detroit race due to prior commitments. Welch, who also ran impressively in the No. 08 Spyder / Lasso Audi R8 LMS during the team’s last visit to a permanent road course, is aiming for a podium spot on a track he is very familiar with.

“It will be nice to finally get back on track in the Audi,” stated Welch. “It’s been a long break for me, and I definitely think this is a track where we can all show well. In Austin, we were threatening the top five for much of the event, and this track should be a great place for everything to really break through for us.”

As a homecoming, a debut event, and return to action for the team, Lime Rock will play a crucial role in the team’s championship pursuit. Race one will take place on Friday, July 5, with round two taking place on Saturday, July 6. Live coverage can be seen at www.world-challengetv.com, or you can see television highlights on NBC Sports on Saturday, July 20, at 4PM ET.

gmg extends program to lamborghini super trofeo series

SANTA ANA, Calif. (June 21, 2013)- In a stellar 2013 racing season that has included three wins, six podiums, and the current lead of the Pirelli World Challenge Championship GT points, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will extend their premier level of race support, tuning and performance to the all-new Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series.

With the first of five race weekends taking place in only two weeks at the historic Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, the team already has one confirmed entry for the series and is actively evaluating additional entries.

As a one-make series of the highly touted Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo, GMG will be one of only five teams tipped to provide service and support for the championship. Beyond entering the series with more wins in professional sports car competition than any other team in the series, GMG has also recently concluded a comprehensive two-day test of the machines at the newly-built Thermal Club near Palm Springs, California.

“What a great opportunity for everyone at GMG,” stated team owner James Sofronas. “The series is unlike any other, and it’s an honor to be a part of such a great program. The level of hospitality and series support is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The organizers at Lamborghini and Blancpain have put forth a great effort to assure the level of comfort and personal attention is unmatched. The series is not only a great place for racers of all experience levels, but also a great place to bring the family as their hospitality and catering is beyond amazing. Plus, the car is fast! I personally did several laps at Thermal this week and the car is right on pace with a Pirelli World Challenge GT or Rolex GT car.”

Featuring 570HP and four-wheel drive, the car is noted for being both fast and fun. As a mid-engine vehicle, the car’s balance makes it particularly easy to learn, and provides a great gateway for racers looking to move up to higher levels of professional sports car racing.

As a five-weekend championship, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series will work as a partnering series to GRAND-AM, the American Le Mans Series, and the IZOD IndyCar Series. Beginning at Lime Rock Park on Friday, July 5, the series will run a North American campaign through Canada, Virginia and Kansas City, concluding in Southern California.

Featuring nearly five hours of track time, drivers will get the opportunity to run 120 minutes of practice as well as take part in two separate races. Drivers interested in running with GMG can contact team owner James Sofronas at 949-887-5090 or james@gmgracing.com.

GMG Continues Podium Streak In Detroit

DETROIT (June 3, 2013)- Heading to Saturday’s Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, the entire crew at Global Motorsports Group (GMG) knew that their two Audi R8 LMS entries would face an uphill road at the twisty and bumpy confines of the temporary street course.

Luckily for drivers James Sofronas and Duncan Ende, a hard-fought, double-header weekend would once again see the team on the podium, and still with a strong hold on the Pirelli World Challenge Series GT point lead.

“We knew this weekend was going to be tough,” stated Sofronas. “With the weight penalties that have been put on us we’ve had to really work hard to get every bit of speed we could to be competitive. Luckily the guys put together a great car and we came away fairly unscathed this weekend.”

With rounds six and seven of the championship taking place on Saturday and Sunday, GMG came into the weekend with added challenges from previous races. After winning a sensational three of the first five rounds, series officials elected to place an additional weight penalty on the cars following their performance in Austin. In total, this meant Sofronas and Ende would carry an additional 150 lbs. from when they’d started the season. On a tight and bumpy street course such as Detroit, the added weight would have a significant impact on the car’s ability to both corner and accelerate.

During Saturday’s round, the theme for both drivers was simply to finish. On a track notorious for high attrition, both Sofronas and Ende drove a cautious pace to find themselves in fourth and sixth, respectively, throughout much of the race. As the round came to its final stages, the No. 14 Mobil 1 / Children’s Tumor Foundation Audi R8 LMS of James Sofronas would give a hard charge toward the top three. However, patience with an eye on championship points would prevent the Californian from taking significant risks. James would eventually finish fourth, his worst finish of the season. Ende, in the No. 24 STANDD / Merchant Services, Ltd. Audi R8 LMS, would see a more frustrating end to his race. After fighting a hard three-way battle with the No. 54 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 of Tim Pappas and the No. 46 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of Tomy Drissi, a mechanical gremlin during a downshift would send Ende wide under braking, allowing Pappas and Drissi to pass through. Ende would finish seventh.

During Sunday’s round, however, the race took a much more positive turn. After qualifying on pole for the event, Sofronas would fall back on the start to third, once again taking some time to get his tires up to temperature for the second half of the race. After watching the leading Volvo and Cadillac slowly gain ground over him, the Audi eventually began to reel the leaders in as James' consistent pace began to show through. Once catching the leaders, an endless series of yellows would mar any hopes for the No. 14 to be able to make a worthwhile pass. After a late race restart saw Sofronas battling hard with the No. 8 Cadillac of Andy Pilgrim, an eventual accident by Pilgrim would end the race under yellow, sealing the third place result for James. This would be his sixth podium in seven rounds, and still with a healthy lead in the series championship.

“The series works very hard to keep everything level, and it unfortunately meant we’d have a hard time passing today,” stated Sofronas. “I was enjoying the fight to get back up front, and if we’d stayed green for the second half of the race I might have had something, but it just wasn’t our day. I hate to see that happen to Andy, but I’m glad he’s OK. It was a good fight, just too bad it ended that way. Either way, we managed to keep our cars clean this weekend and we’ll head off to Lime Rock knowing we can show well.”

For Los Angeles native Duncan Ende, a march to the front would net him a career-equaling best finish of fourth. After falling back a few places on the start, Ende found himself locked in several battles, first with Mike Skeen’s Nissan and then eventually the leading pack of Volvos and Cadillacs. Ende sat a comfortable fifth heading into a late race restart. As Sofronas and Pilgrim engaged in a late-braking dual headed into turn three, Pilgrim’s car came to such a halt that Ende was left with no choice but to make contact, managing to drive away relatively unscathed en route to fourth.

“Fourth was a good result for us today, and once again a pretty busy race to get there,” stated Ende. “It seemed like every position involved people getting together in front of me, but luckily I managed to escape it all. I apologized to Andy for running into the back of him, but he seemed to understand there wasn’t much I could do to avoid it. The crew put together a great car, and I think heading into the road courses we should have a real shot at some hardware.”

For Bill Ziegler’s No. 95 Swisher Racing Pontiac Solstice, mechanical troubles would keep the car from racing in front of its “home” crowd of Detroit fans, however, the car would return for a quiet second round. Surviving the carnage that enveloped much of the GTS field, Ziegler would bring his car home safely in 13th.

Following four races in two weeks, the entire Pirelli World Challenge Series will take a one-month break before returning to the historic Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut. As only the second permanent road course that the series has run on all season, the entire GMG organization looks forward to continuing their championship fight. Round Eight will take place on Friday, July 5, with Round Nine the next day. Live coverage can be found on www.world-challengetv.com.

Highlights from Detroit can be viewed on NBC Sports on Sunday, June 16, at 5PM ET.

gmg brings championship pursuit to motor city

SANTA ANA, Calif. (May 24, 2013)- Just two weeks after their third Pirelli World Challenge victory in five races, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will head to the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix with a clear mission; maximize championship points.

“This season has just been incredible for me personally,” stated team owner and driver James Sofronas. “We knew this year would be one of our best shots at a championship, and so far it’s surpassed my wildest expectations.”

Following a series-record seven entries for the team at the previous round in Austin, GMG will bring three cars to next weekend’s event. Competing on yet another street course, the tricky 2.1-mile temporary circuit located on Detroit’s Belle Isle should prove for a competitive race between many of the top entries. While the balance, tire management, and reliability of the team’s Audi R8 LMS has played a critical role in their 2013 campaign, the outright pace of the K-Pax Volvo on street courses, the developing strength of the Black Swan Racing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, and the hometown motivation of the Cadillac CTS-V.R can’t be underestimated.

For Sofronas and the No. 14 Mobil 1 / Children’s Tumor Foundation Audi R8 LMS, approaching the weekend with modest expectations has worked well to this point in the season.

“Every weekend we’ve come in with modest expectations,” stated Sofronas. “This is a very tight group at the front, and the outright pace of some of the other cars has been tough to compete with. Luck has been on our side, but a lot of that has come through a reliable platform with a great crew, and we’re looking to continue that into Detroit.”

Running on the streets of Belle Isle for the first time in his career, GMG’s Duncan Ende will also return to the No. 24 STANDD / Merchant Services, Ltd. Audi R8 LMS. As a season-long entrant points are always important, but for Ende, walking away with some hardware (in the form of a trophy) is his most coveted goal.

“We’ve shown that we’re capable of a podium, we just need everything to come together,” stated Ende, who was in a podium position during both races of the previous rounds in Austin before bad luck intervened. “We’ve made great progress over the season with understanding what we need to do to get to the front, and hopefully Detroit will really showcase it. This is a track I’ve always wanted to run at, it has a rich history over the decades and I’m looking forward to seeing the crowd.”

Completing GMG’s Detroit lineup will be Bill Ziegler and the No. 95 Swisher Racing Pontiac Solstice. As the lone Pontiac entry in the series, the opportunity to return to the car’s home city will no doubt be a hit with the locals and should provide a unique piece of nostalgia for the fans.

“I’m looking forward to racing a Pontiac in Detroit,” stated Ziegler. “Austin was a challenging weekend for us, but I think we’ve learned a few things in the process that should help us next weekend. With only three cars at GMG this weekend it will definitely be a different environment, but one I look forward to.”

Round six of the Pirelli World Challenge championship will take place on Saturday, June 1, with the seventh round taking place one day later on June 2. Live broadcasting can be found on www.world-challengetv.com.

Television highlights will be broadcast on Sunday, June 15, on NBC Sports Network at 5PM ET.

GMG, Sofronas Take Incredible Third Victory of Season

AUSTIN, Texas (May 19, 2013)- In what has been an unbelievable 2013 Pirelli World Challenge Season, GMG’s James Sofronas took his third victory of the season during this weekend’s fourth and fifth rounds at Circuit of the Americas.

“Wow, what an incredible day,” stated Sofronas. “Yesterday’s race with Johnny showed we knew we had a good car, and once again luck was on our side today. The key to this entire season has been having a reliable and consistent car in the Audi R8 LMS, and a crew that has been relentless in looking over every detail. The support we’ve had from Audi on this program has obviously been instrumental, and the guys have been working non-stop to get us here. I’m glad we can celebrate with all of them.”

Following a successful test at the brand-new Austin, Texas facility, the entire Global Motorsports Group (GMG) came in to this weekend’s rounds of the championship knowing that they had a team capable of victory. With a series-record seven cars entered by the team, five of them being the Audi R8 LMS, Sofronas never lost a step in pursuit of his first series championship.

Starting Saturday’s fourth round from the second position, James’ No. 14 Mobil 1 / Children’s Tumor Foundation Audi R8 LMS had a fairly quiet race. Falling back during the standing start, a spirited battle between Sofronas and the No. 8 Cadillac of Andy Pilgrim as well as GMG teammate Duncan Ende led to race-leader Johnny O’Connell building a healthy lead over the field. While Sofronas would comfortably place himself in second during the later stages of the race, the pace of O’Connell’s No. 3 Cadillac was simply too much, with James finishing second; his fourth straight podium.

During today’s fifth round, however, the race would take a significantly different turn. Starting on the front row, the Audi R8 LMS would fall back to third behind the leading Cadillacs. By lap three, the Cadillac of O’Connell would pull to the side with mechanical gremlins. With Sofronas now in second, the balance over the course of the race for the Audi allowed the No. 14 to gain ground on the now-leading Cadillac of Pilgrim. Over time, the consistency of the No. 14 was simply too much for Pilgrim, with Sofronas taking the lead on lap eight and never looking back.

It would be the third victory in five races for James’ 2013 effort, and the Villa Park, California resident has never been off the podium this season.

For Duncan Ende’s No. 24 STANDD / Merchant Services, Ltd. Audi R8 LMS, a seventh and fifth-place finish were not indicative of the Californian’s overall showing.

After qualifying seventh for Saturday’s round, Ende made immediate work of the field in front of him, eventually finding himself glued to Sofronas’ rear-end during the middle stages of the race. Fighting his teammate hard for a podium position, a late re-start would allow Alex Figge’s No. 9 Volvo to put Ende behind, eventually fading back to seventh in the mix, and literally finishing  0.1 seconds behind Mike Skeen’s No. 2 Corvette in a last lap drag race.

For today’s round, Ende was determined to translate his third starting position into his first career Pirelli World Challenge podium. For much of the race it looked like that would finally materialize. Never losing site of his teammate, Ende pursued Sofronas during the entirety of the race. Finding himself in third after O’Connell’s retirement, Ende would spend a good deal of the middle portion of the race battling with the Cadillac of Andy Pilgrim, eventually making the pass with less than 10 laps to go. Sitting in second, a late-race caution would put Duncan right behind race leader James Sofronas for a three-lap shootout to the end. Unfortunately, a punctured left rear tire prior to the caution would create a handful for Ende, eventually leading to Pilgrim passing him on the re-start. Ende would nurse the car home for the final laps, eventually settling for fifth.

“Another crazy weekend, what do I say?” stated Ende. “I was disappointed with Friday’s qualifying, so it was great to come back on Saturday and immediately catch up to James. We didn’t have any mechanical issues and we were finally able to show our ability, but I just caught some bad breaks in traffic and fell back. Today was another great race, we just slipped at the end with the tire. I was really hoping to race James at the end and finally come home with some hardware, but I went wide to avoid crashing into Andy, and from there I was just trying to nurse the car home. It’s disappointing to miss the podium again, but at least we were in contention all weekend and free of mechanical issues.”

For Alex Welch’s No. 08 Spyder / Lasso Audi R8 LMS, a quiet weekend would net two top-10 finishes for the Colorado resident. On Saturday, Welch would run consistent and trouble free to an eventual ninth-place finish. Running one of the fastest laps in the field, Alex was part of a massive mid-field battle, never putting a scratch on the car in the process.

Looking for another top-10 on Sunday, Welch set his fastest lap of the weekend during the race’s third lap, once again fighting hard with the Corvette of Mike Skeen and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 of Tim Pappas, eventually taking sixth.

“I’m pretty happy with the weekend,” stated Welch. “The strength of James’ and Duncan’s runs showed just how good the program is, and with a little less traffic I think we could have the No. 08 right there. It was great to run clean with Tim and Mike, and I think we found a few things that will help us this season. I definitely have my eyes set on a podium at my next race.”

For Bret Curtis, a mixed weekend was on hand for the Westlake Village, California resident. After showing strong during practice, Curtis showed the potential of the No. 32 Spectra Resources Audi R8 LMS by qualifying the car in fifth on Friday.

Unfortunately, the highlights stopped there as Curtis had a difficult race on Saturday. On lap five, an errant Porsche crashed hard in to the No. 32, causing  unrepairable damage to Curtis’ vehicle and retiring in 16th place.

Hoping for better results on Sunday, a hard weekend of car repairs by the GMG crew would give Curtis another great car, however unfortunate luck would rear its head again. On the first turn of the race, another incident would cause damage yet again, this time allowing Curtis to continue on, though wounded, to a quiet ninth.

“We definitely could have used a little better luck out here,” stated Curtis. “I was really pumped after Friday. To qualify in fifth we showed our potential, the guys really gave me a good car. Saturday’s incident was really unfortunate. The other driver’s move was nothing I would have expected, and pretty frustrating. The guys did a great job getting the car turned around. Unfortunately, contact again today before I was out of the first turn kind of ruined any hope of doing well, but at least we were able to get a top-10 out of it. The potential is definitely there for some great results, hopefully it will show soon.”

Running a forgettable weekend was team newcomer Mike Hedlund. Driving the No. 40 Audi R8 LMS, the Woodside, California native showed considerable ability in a car he’d never driven prior to this weekend. Qualifying at a similar time to his teammates, Mike went in to the weekend with high expectations. However, a series of mechanical problems would prove otherwise. During Saturday’s race, an overheating issue while in sixth place would cause Hedlund to retire, eventually credited with 15th. Twenty-four hours later, the driver would retire again with gearbox issues.

“It definitely wasn’t the weekend we had wanted,” stated Hedlund. “It’s part of racing to have mechanical gremlins like this, hopefully it’s all out of the way now for next time. I really appreciate all the effort that the GMG guys put into the car, and it would have been nice to have had some results. Regardless, I appreciate the opportunity, and wish the team the best for the year!”

Finally, Bill Ziegler’s No. 95 Swisher Racing Pontiac would also have a very mixed weekend in the GTS category. Continuing to develop their machine, a promising series of runs in practice and qualifying were unfortunately marred by mechanical retirements on Saturday and Sunday.

“It definitely wasn’t the weekend we’d hoped for,” stated Ziegler. “Development is a big part of this program, and unfortunately it means you can have weekends like this one. I appreciate all the work that the GMG guys did to get us here, and we’ll get them at Detroit.”

With the team putting a very strong stamp on the Pirelli World Challenge GT Championship, there is little time to relax as the team prepares for the next round in just two weeks. The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will hold the sixth and seventh rounds of the championship on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.

NBC Sports Network will feature television coverage of this weekend’s race at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, June 16, at 5PM ET.
