GMG Ready for Super Trofeo Round at Home Event

Continuing an eventful few months that will see the team at their third event in five weeks, Global Motorsports Group (GMG Racing) will arrive at this weekend’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America ready to continue the success from the previous round that included a win and multiple podiums. Competing at the famed WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, this weekend will serve as a home event for the Southern California team as well as team partner Lamborghini Newport Beach, with Mel Johnson and Thomas Lovelady looking to continue their winning ways, the return of Jeffrey Cheng and Jon Hirshberg, and finally James Sofronas will drive solo as part of the team’s 2020 planning and development.

“Laguna Seca is one of our home tracks, and returning here is an opportunity we always look forward to,” stated GMG team owner and driver James Sofronas. “Our record of success in the Super Trofeo chmampionship speaks for itself, and this weekend should continue the trend. Before anything else, I really want to extend my appreciation to Lamborghini Newport Beach for helping make this program a reality. Pietro Frigerio and his entire staff truly understand how to make this all work, and they’ve been a great partner so far. Mel and Thomas have been a continually strong combination, and hopefully this weekend will further their winning ways. Jeffrey and Jon have also shown well, with the last event furthering the experience of the whole organization. I’m personally looking forward to getting back out there with my solo entry. Our original intention was to run myself with a co-driver who was joining, however timing didn’t work out so we’ll turn my focus to simply gathering more data on this car and program as we continue to further develop our 2020 planning.”

Located just hours away from their Santa Ana based shop, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca remains one of the most scenic circuits on the 2019 schedule. A major step in GMG’s driver development system, drivers will have the opportunity to compete in some of the fastest sportscar machinery in the U.S., but with a tiered system catering to drivers with a variety of driving experience. Combined with GMG’s years of experience, data, and coaching, the series provides a great testing and proving ground for new drivers.

Driving the No. 08 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo, Mel Johnson and Thomas Lovelady are looking to defend their victory from the most recent round at VIRginia International Raceway. Continuing a strong season to date, their most recent event saw the duo open up with a podium, only to improve on it with victory just one day later. Driving the scenic hills and crests of Monterey, hopes are high to continue where they left off.

Also looking to continue and improve, Jeffrey Cheng will also be back behind the wheel with Jon Hirshberg rejoining as teammate. Gaining valuable experience at each event , both drivers continue to show strong moments behind the wheel, with a mindset on podiums well within reach.

Finally, James Sofronas will drive solo in the Am category, adding a third car with a sole focus on development. The Southern Californian was originally slated to compete in the Pro-Am category with a co-driver, but will now take the event on solo, which in turn means he will honor the series request for him to run solo in the Am category due to his driver rating of Bronze. Given Sofronas’ championship-winning history and multiple victories in the Super Trofeo series, James will take to the wheel to provide a baseline for the driving group both for setup and data, as well as help shape decisions for 2020 by adding to their engineering notebook. This should further add to the team’s potential for those looking to align with any entrants looking for a team with the experience and results to run a truly top-tier program.

Official practice begins this Friday, with a double-header of race action on both Saturday and Sunday.

Nero Nemesis Aventador SV

We think that it’s pretty safe to say that the Lamborghini Aventador SuperVeloce or “SV” is one of the most amazing cars out on the road today. Not only does it look absolutely insane, but it sounds just as mental!

This sinister, Nero Nemesis Aventador SV came in to get a little crazier with our GMG SV Exhaust system installed, along with a few other additions. As if this bull wasn’t loud enough, we took it from angry to enraged!

In order to protect the paint on this beauty, we installed a full Clear Plex Stealth Clear bra and skid plates. To give this sharp looking SV a more aggressive look, it was lowered it with Novitec Lowering springs, and it now sits on 20″/21″ Brixton Forged PF5 2-Piece wheels in gloss black. We also made a custom audio system, to make the music just as loud as the exhaust! A few more of the little things we changed out are all of the side markers to European spec markers, changed the calipers to red, red SV logo, and added red tire stickers.

Not many people are brave enough to modify their already incredible SV, but then there are those that believe crazy isn’t crazy enough!

Black Porsche 991.1 50th Anniversary

Many customers visit us to get their GT3s, GT2 RSs, or Turbos track ready, but some just want their daily to be a little more exciting. While we offer a plethora of GMG products for the cars built to tear up the track, we also offer support for the more everyday cars.

We had a customer bring in their 991 50th Anniversary 911 to get lowered with H&R lowering springs and have our GMG WC-Sport Exhaust System installed! This 50th Anniversary is one of the most elegant everyday Porsches available right now, with the Fuchs wheels and the luxurious exterior chrome trim, it’s definitely easy on the eyes. We were able to maintain the elegance of this special car, while giving it a slightly more aggressive stance. We also gave it a louder and deeper growl with our GMG WC-Sport Exhaust System.

To make the exterior a little cleaner, we swapped the taillights and front side markers with clear lenses and had a full paint correction done. This 50th is more than just a looker now and its going to be a very exciting commuter!

Novitec Ferrari 488 Spider

The Ferrari 488 is what many believe to be the beginning of a new direction for the Italian supercar brand. The mid-engine, twin-turbo V8, is something that hasn’t been seen from Ferrari in decades, and it steers the mid-engine segment of the company away from what most people are used to. Nevertheless, its curvy styling and sleek lines are traditional traits that haven’t veered off course.

So, how can you make an Italian work of art look even better? Well, more Carbon Fiber and upgraded wheels of course!! This Rosso Corsa 488 Spider came in to our shop to be fitted with a set of HRE P101 wheels in satin black and a lot of Novitec Carbon Fiber goodies!

We installed a Novitec exhaust, Novitec lowering springs, Novitec Carbon Fiber front cover insert, Novitec Carbon Fiber side window triangle covers, Novitec Carbon Fiber taillight covers, Novitec Carbon Fiber rear spoiler, Capristo Carbon Fiber mirrors, and Capristo Carbon Fiber gas cap cover. Also added was the satin black wrapped roof and engine bonnet. The Novitec exhaust really gives brings back the classic Ferrari V8 sound that people love and the HRE wheels with the Novitec springs give it a much more aggressive stance! This stunning stallion is now LOADED with Carbon Fiber, as if this car didn’t have enough from the factory!

The full list of modifications included:
HRE P101 wheels in satin black
Novitec exhaust
Novitec lowering springs
Novitec Carbon Fiber front cover insert
Novitec Carbon Fiber side window triangle covers

GMG Returns to Watkins Glen Ready to Take on GT4 Ranks

Continuing a summer season that has seen the team take a multitude of victories and podiums, Global Motorsports Group (GMG Racing) will return to the SRO ranks this weekend at Watkins Glen. Competing in multiple GT4 categories, Jason Bell will return to the sprint ranks with his Porsche Cayman GT4, the SprintX division with Andrew Davis in another Porsche entry, and similarly CJ Moses will arrive with James Sofronas also in Audi R8 LMS GT4.

“We’re excited to return to the SRO ranks this weekend,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “Our crew has been hard at work all summer getting us ready, and this weekend should serve all of our programs well. This will be Jason Bell’s first race after a great showing in Belgium, and of course with a veteran like Andrew Davis they should have a really good shot in Sprint X. We love having CJ Moses back in the paddock and hopefully we’ll continue to make progress together as well.”

In the No. 2 Porsche Cayman GT4, Bell will compete solo during the weekend’s Sprint events. Having last competed solo in July as part of the debut of the new Porsche 911 GT2, the high speed twists and turns of the famed Watkins Glen road course should serve him well.

Not to be outdone, Jason will also team up with veteran Andrew Davis in a separate Porsche. A veteran of GT racing of nearing two decades, Davis joins the team as the 2011 Rolex GT champion, and the winner of a number of GT3 and GT4-based categories.

“I had an awesome time in Europe and we learned a lot,” explained Jason Bell. “Hopefully we will be able to transfer some of that newfound knowledge back to our remaining events in North America starting with this weekend. The goal is simple. Win!”

In the No. 04 CrowdStrike/AWS Audi R8 LMS GT4, CJ Moses will once again return to the team with James Sofronas in the SprintX ranks. Enjoying a limited schedule in which Moses has been on a highlight tour of some of the country’s greatest road courses, a fun weekend is in store.

“Watkins Glen is the perfect setting to wrap up my GT4 race season,” said Moses. “We started by racing the CrowdStrike/AWS Audi R8 at two coastal street courses, followed by VIR in the rolling hills of the Virginia countryside. James and I both grew up in New York so it’s fitting we’ll share a car there – and hopefully we’ll also share another podium! James and GMG are going to prepare a great Audi to race at Watkins Glen. There’s a full field of GT4 competitors waiting for us – we’re ready!”

The Pirelli GT4 America SprintX Championship will compete at Watkins Glen International from August 30–September 1. Race One is set for 5:50 p.m. ET on Saturday with Race Two at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. CBS Sports Network television coverage is set for noon ET on Sunday, September 8.
