A successful return to competition at VIR for GMG Racing

This past weekend marked the return of racing in the SRO Series for North America, and it was an extremely busy one for the GMG Racing Team. Running 4 cars across 3 separate categories, while having make up races for both Long Beach and St. Pete, there was always a car on track with back to back sessions and a very congested schedule. Team Owner James Sofronas added, “I couldn’t be prouder of these guys. We knew that we had a massive task at hand once we saw the schedule and they executed every step of the way”.

It was a busy weekend at Virginia International Raceway for GMG Racing pilot, Jason Bell. Competing in three different categories and eight races over the five-day event, Bell racked up five podium results and six top-five finishes. Jason Bell, “I knew coming into this weekend that I had to be prepared and ready to go. I was definitely tired at the end of the last race on Sunday, but the GMG guys gave me everything I needed to run up front and I am grateful to have this team behind me.”

Rounding out the Lineup for the weekend was Stu Frederick in the #57 Porsche GT2RS ClubSport. A race 1 incident would take him out early, as there was some fluid on track that caused contact with one of the GT3 competitors and forced the car to retire early. In Race 2 Stu found redemption while starting from the back. He was able to overtake Karl Leinseng to grab the final podium spot with a P3 overall and P1 in the Iron Class in both races respectively.

“All in all, it was a great weekend and we’re just happy to be back out here,” stated team logistics director Joe Foster. “It was good to have a bit of normalcy in our lives and do what we love to do which is to see our clients succeed.”

Next up the team will set it sights on Sonoma Raceway for the next rounds for GT4 and GTSC competition. Stay tuned for more info to come.

GMG Eager To Resume Racing At VIR

After an almost 4-month hiatus from motorsports activity, GMG Racing is excited to jump back into the Sportscar Racing world with 4 Entries in the SRO GT America series.
With 4 entries across 3 categories, it will be a busy one for the team, a welcome challenge that we’ve been preparing for since our last event at COTA, stated Team Owner, James Sofronas. We are ready to get back to work here in Virginia as this track is one of the best in North America and our drivers have been chomping at the bit to get back in their cars. “We are thrilled to be back racing with SRO this weekend. We’ve been able to use this downtime to really focus and prepare for the rest of the season. We have been fortunate to have been able to test at The Thermal Club and continue to develop both the GT4 and GT2 platforms, so we anticipate hitting the ground running and being competitive. And I have full confidence in both Jason Bell and Stu Frederick, in their ability to perform at a level required for success this weekend.
It’s a similar sentiment from team Logistics Manager, Joe Foster. “It’s been a crazy year. We’ve had to adapt and chase a moving target more than a few times. I can’t wait to be back at VIR and see our racing family (from a distance of course). I’ve been hard at work preparing for this weekend and just rolling with the punches. This Team is more than ready to go!”

Leading the charge this weekend is team veteran Jason Bell. Bell will pilot three cars in both the GT4 Sprint and Sprint X Races, as well as the class debut in the USA for the all new GT Sports Club in his Porsche GT2RS Clubsport. Jason Bell, “I have been waiting for this moment since we last officially ran the GTSC at Spa last year. This is what we have been planning for nearly a year. Can’t wait to take part in this historic race here this weekend.”

Joining the team for a full Season of GT Sports Club is Stu Frederick. He will also be competing in the GTSC Iron Class with his Porsche GT2RS Clubsport. Stu Frederick, “I can’t wait to get out on track. The guys at GMG have given me everything I need during the pre-season. I feel ready to go!”

On-track action at VIR begins Friday, July 10 at 9:05am Eastern for the first GT World Challenge practice session of the weekend, followed by the GT Sports Club America first practice scheduled at 9:20am. Saturday, July 11’s 90-minute Round 3 race (Round 1 for GT Sports Club) is scheduled to go green at 1:45pm Eastern, while Round 4 (GT Sports Club Round 2) is scheduled to start at 1:45pm Eastern on Sunday, July 12. Both races and qualifying will be streamed live on youtube.com/GTWorld, as well as broadcasted live on CBS Sports Network.

GMG Ready for Large and Diverse Roster of Racing in 2020

With a variety of changes in store for the revamped SRO America, formerly known as Pirelli World Challenge, Global Motorsports Group (GMG Racing) will head in to the 2020 season with a large and diverse roster of drivers and cars to conquer the season ahead, with the opportunity of even further expansion on offer in the coming year. With the season-opening event taking place this weekend at Circuit of the Americas (CoTA) in Austin, Texas, the team is ready for the year’s beginning.

“I’m excited to finally get the 2020 season going,” stated GMG team owner and driver James Sofronas. “Everyone at SRO America has been extremely attentive to the needs of teams like ours and what our customers really enjoy in this type of racing, and the new formats and categories reflect just that. Having Jason Bell back is a great testament to the relationship we’ve forged over the years, and he’ll be enjoying an unprecedented amount of seat time with all of the campaigns he’s running. Alex Welch is back in our fold which is very exciting given our decade-long history, and another veteran of the team in Elias Sabo really shows the value of our program to returning drivers. Additionally, categories like the new GTSC allow us to welcome new drivers like Stu Frederick, Mike LaFever, and Stephen Lawler, and additionally we welcome Mark Crigler and the return of CJ Moses to our GT4 efforts. It’s a busy year but one that wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous supporting crew we have here, and we’re still open to even more programs.”

Following the Europe-based SRO organization taking over the former Pirelli World Challenge beginning in 2019, the series has undergone a dramatic transition to a very customer-focused series, which will see much of the same in 2020, with GMG taking advantage of not only the highly subscribed GT4 ranks, but the all-new GT2-focused platform which will be referred to as GTSC.

Now in his third year of competition with the team, Jason Bell will headline with three different campaigns in 2020. Continuing with the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, Bell will return in both the Sprint and SprintX categories of the GT4 America series, allowing him to drive solo in the in the sprint rounds, and with an experienced co-driver in the endurance-based SprintX. For SprintX, Bell will be joined by Andrew Davis, one of the most sought after sportscar veterans in the paddock. Not only does Davis join as a champion of the former Rolex GT Sports Car Championship, but one of the most venerable coaches in the business, providing Bell with both a boost in performance as well as great off-track support.

Adding to that, Bell will take part in the burgeoning GTSC category, a new division for sportsman drivers taking to the wheel of the revitalized GT2-platform. Acquiring the all-new Porsche GT2RS Clubsport to tackle the series, Bell will have three different opportunities to gain points toward his pursuit of the Porsche International Drivers’ Cup, an award given to the best performing independent driver in Porsche machinery.

Returning in 2020, Alex Welch will also join the fold, campaigning his Audi R8 LMS GT4. Having driven with the team in various capacities over the last decade, the return of Welch will not only showcase the team’s depth with the Audi, but will also see a reunion between Welch and co-driver James Sofronas at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. In addition, Welch and GMG will welcome newcomer Michael McGrath to co-drive in multiple SprintX rounds.

Another veteran of the team, Elias Sabo will return in 2020, driving at this weekend’s season-opener in the SprintX category. Having driven a variety of vehicles throughout his GMG campaigns, the 2020 season will see Sabo take to the wheel of his Audi R8 LMS GT4, with co-driver Andy Lee joining as an experienced coach and mentor.

Also arriving during this weekend’s opener will be James Sofronas driving in the GT3 ranks, campaigning his Porsche 911 GT3 R. With the new-for-2020 rules creating a unique blend of driver rules and combinations in GT3 competition, James will be joined this weekend by the highly-renowned Jeroen Bleekemolen. One of the most reputed sportscar drivers anywhere, Bleekemolen has titles including the Porsche Supercup, a winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 12 Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans, and the North American Endurance Cup. A highly regarded Porsche driver, the combination of Bleekemolen and Sofronas has a strong potential for results in Austin.

While the aforementioned GTSC series will not begin until June at VIRginia International Raceway, GMG is proud to welcome several series newcomers in addition to Jason Bell’s entry. Demonstrating GMG’s reputation for welcoming aspiring drivers and integrating them in to the team’s vertically-built development program, Stu Frederick, Mike LaFever and Stephen Lawler will all arrive ready to conquer the GTSC ranks.

Additionally, the team will also field several partial schedules, including CJ Moses and his Audi R8 LMS GT4 at the Grand Prix of Long Beach alongside Ryan Dalziel, as well as Mark Crigler in a to-be-announced schedule.

That’s 13 drivers, 11 cars, and an incredible 2020 season ahead, all beginning this weekend. Official practice begins this Friday, March 6, with a full weekend of racing on the 7th and 8th.

GMG Racing Winning Weekend at SRO Winter Invitational at The Thermal Club

This past weekend, The Thermal Club held the first ever SRO Winter Invitational under perfect, sunny weather. 26 cars from GT Sports Club, Pirelli GT4 America, and TC America duked it out on the private motorsports country club’s 2.5-mile Twin Palms configuration. We also saw the North American debut of the first ever GT2 category, which included the Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport and the 488 Ferrari Challenge

Jason Bell and Stephen Lawler both fought fiercely in their Porsche GT2RS Clubsports over the weekend to conquer the new GT2 Category. On Saturday Bell was able to claim victory in the GT2 race, and in process take third overall and taking top honors for the day in class. Fellow driver Lawler was right there with him on the podium with a strong P.2, showing they are both forces to be reckoned with.

With Bell sitting out for Sunday’s race due to a scheduling conflict, Lawler held it down for the team and dominated the GT2 class securing the win by driving a flawless race. Both Bell and Lawler will definitely be the ones to watch in the new GT2 category as the season moves forward with plans to be announced soon.

“The diversity of classes out there on the track together is truly amazing,” stated GMG team owner and driver James Sofronas. “It really shows the different levels of customer racing available. While I race in the GT3 class, it’s great to have our clients out there as well dominating their respective classes. That’s really what it’s all about. If they’re happy, GMG is happy.”

On Saturday, driving the Audi R8 LMS Ultra, James Sofronas fought hard against the young gun Steven Aghakhani in his Mercedes-AMG GT3, but due to tire issue, he had to retire from the lead at the halfway point. Sunday was a fierce battle again as the talented Aghakhani put a couple moves on James but wasn’t able to make them stick. Sofronas was able to clinch the overall win for the weekend in the GT3 class.

Battling in the GT4 class, Mark Crigler in his No. 140 Porsche Cayman GT4 MR was up against some fearsome competition on Sunday. Crigler was able to fight through the McLaren’s and BMWs to secure a solid top 10 position in his class all while driving to some new personal best times over the course of the weekend.

We are very excited to work with Porsche Motorsport North America, to be a part of the new GT2 class. The next round of the SRO Winter Series will be held January 16-19 at The Thermal Club and GMG will be competing with many cars across various categories. Look for an official announcement in the coming weeks.
