Andrew palmer Takes victory in debut lamborghini super trofeo series weekend

Having literally never competed in a car race before this weekend, karting standout Andrew Palmer wrapped up this weekend’s fourth weekend of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series with a victory at Virginia International Raceway (VIR).

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” stated the 19-year-old. “There was some stiff competition out there, but the guys at GMG have put together a fantastic program for me from start to finish, and it showed today. After getting pole and coming so close to winning yesterday, today made for good redemption. I’m really looking forward to the next event.”

Having won a national karting title in 2010, and following that up with numerous domestic and international podiums, the young Chicago native had yet to experience racing in a full-fledged car. Thanks to a test and development program run in concert with The Thermal Club, a private racing circuit located near Palm Springs, California, Palmer was able to gain crucial seat time and experience before ever arriving to VIR.

Driving the No. 14 The Thermal Club Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4, Palmer drove a remarkable march through the field. Starting fourth as a result of the previous day’s race, Palmer immediately made work of the field in front of him. Getting up to second in the early stages, Palmer drove beyond his years as he managed to put pressure on the leading Louis Philippe Montour, all the meanwhile managing his tires. With four laps to go, the strategy paid off and he was able to make a spectacular pass for the lead, and even built a five second gap to the finish.

“The talent and maturity that Andrew demonstrated this weekend is remarkable,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “This series is getting more and more competitive by the week, and he has demonstrated remarkable ability since his first time in the car.”

Beyond the No. 14, Jeff Rodrigues also made an impressive debut for the series. Driving his No. 07 machine, the Californian also utilized his experience gained at The Thermal Club to emerge with a third place in the sportsman category, and fifth overall.

Meanwhile, Bruce and Brandon Jenner would close out the weekend with a strong seventh place finish. Driving the No. 33 Forgiato Wheels Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4, the duo survived a steady race to enjoy an incident free weekend.

Finally, Tom O’Gara and Parris Mullins would round out the GMG lineup with a ninth place for the No. 69 Lamborghini Beverly Hills / O’Gara Coach Company machine. Running an incident free weekend of their own, the duo would improve their fastest lap by a remarkable five seconds between the Friday and Saturday races.

“It’s been so great to work with the Tom, Parris, the Jenners, and now Jeff and Andrew in this series,” continued Sofronas. “This has proven to be such a great development series, we look forward to finishing out the season in our backyard in Fontana.”

With a two-week break, the series will return on October 20 at the famed California Speedway, right after the IZOD IndyCar Weekend.
