James Sofronas Scores Podium For GMG Racing in Wild Pirelli World Challenge Season Opener

James Sofronas of GMG Racing, the multi-series professional racing team and premier performance tuning facility for European vehicles in Southern California, fought through the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, for a second place GT finish followed by a fourth place finish in a wild 2012 Pirelli World Challenge season opening double-header fraught with yellow-flags and penalties.

Sofronas landed a 7th place start for the No. 14 Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3 in the first race of the Grand Prix of St. Petersberg during a qualifying round that the saw the car and crew addressing a brake bias issue.

The 50-minute timed Round 1 race presented drivers a challenge with narrow turns and a field crowded by over 50 starting vehicles, yielding four full-course caution periods. Sofronas spent much of the race battling traffic and Johnny O’Connell in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. Lawson Aschenbach slipped away from both of them to cross the line first in the No. 1 Privacy Star/Entrust Porsche 911 GT3 with O’Connell edging out Sofronas for a finish under a yellow flag. However, a penalty levied against Aschenbach claimed his victory and bumped the podium finish up to the runner-up spot for Sofronas.

“It was a typical street fight with a lot of bumping and banging,” noted Sofronas. “The GMG Porsche was solid and the team did a great job prepping the car so it could hang tough for the fight to the podium. The top 5 of us ran hard, nose-to-tail, for the entire race. Unfortunately the yellows sapped the momentum out of the race but we took advantage of restarts to make up spots from 7th to 2nd with just a few dings on the car.”

Sofronas came on strong again the next day for Round 2 of the double-header but was edged out of a podium spot with a fourth place finish. It was another wild race that saw three restarts from full-course cautions as he battled it out with Andy Pilgrim in the No. 8 Cadillac Racing CTS-V Coupe. Contact with another vehicle during the race hindered performance from the No. 14 Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3. “The restarts were so much fun as I had the advantage of StopTech brakes to take my car deep into the brake zones to make several passes.”

“I had great battles with O’Connell on Saturday and Pilgrim on Sunday,” said Sofronas. “Racing with two pros like that makes it a lot of fun. Coming out of these races with a 2nd and 4th finish isn’t bad considering all of the yellows and damage to the car. For Sunday’s race I had slight contact with Figge in his Volvo which bent our right rear rim and knocked the alignment out so unfortunately we really didn’t have a car to contend with.”

GMG Racing teammate Dino Crescentini didn’t get off unscathed. The No 4. GMG StopTech Porsche 911 GT3 was taken out of the Round 1 race after contact during the first restart resulted in broken rear suspension. Crescentini was then involved in contact during the 4th lap of the second race which also caused suspension damage, forcing him to the pits to retire the car. In the GTS class, the No. 95 GMG Swisher Mitsubishi Evo piloted by Bill Ziegler ran strong during the weekend running as high as 3rd place, but also fell prey to the intense traffic and restarts to finish 10th on Saturday and 12th on Sunday.

The next stop for the Pirelli World Challenge will be in GMG Racing’s backyard as Round 3 of the series comes to Southern California for the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 15.  For more information about GMG Racing, visit www.GMGracing.com or keep up to date through Facebook (GMG Racing), Twitter (@GMGracing) and YouTube ( /GMGracing).

GMG Racing Returns for 2012 Pirelli World Challenge with Sofronas, Crescentini And Ziegler in Lineup

GMG Racing, the multi-series professional racing team and premier performance tuning facility for European vehicles in Southern California, returns for another season of Pirelli World Challenge racing with the lineup of drivers that has made GMG a perennial candidate for series, drivers and manufacturers championships. The team also revealed the addition of North America’s only Audi R8 LMS GT3 to the vehicle lineup later in the season.

Dino Crescentini returns for a full season of racing after a partial schedule in 2011. He will once again be behind the wheel in the No. 4 GMG StopTech Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car in the GT class. Crescentini brings with him 30 years of racing experience logging several hundred races and has been racing in the Pirelli World Challenge series since 2004. He has picked up three World Challenge race victories including checkered flags at Portland, Watkins Glen and St. Petersburg plus a long list of podium finishes.

Crescentini earned visits to the podium early in the 2011 season with his aggressive driving style. The CEO of StopTech brakes has built a reputation for diving deep into the turns before hitting the left pedal, gaining valuable time on each lap and always hovering near the front of the pack. A scaled back lineup of races in the second half of the season, to spend more time in Southern California with his newborn child, held him back from mounting an overall challenge for the Drivers Championship after holding the lead for part of 2010.

“It is great to be back for a full season of racing,” notes Crescentini. “I like World Challenge racing because it is the most competitive racing format in North America,” stated Crescentini. “I’m back and aiming for the championship this season.”

Bill Ziegler returns with GMG Racing for his fourth Pirelli World Challenge season. The 2009 World Challenge Rookie of the Year will once again pilot the No. 95 GMG Swisher Mitsubishi Evo in the GTS class. “We spent a great deal of time working with this car in the off season and it feels stronger and more responsive than ever, a real force to be reckoned with on the track,” says Ziegler.

“I’m looking forward to tackling the street courses in this year’s World Challenge race schedule. Those are always my favorites,” he adds.

James Sofronas, GMG Racing’s president, co-founder, and lead driver looks to build on the strong momentum from last season in the No. 14 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in the GT class. Sofronas started the season with 4 consecutive podiums and remained a fixture there throughout the season. He rolled into the summer months on top of the 2011 Drivers’ Championship standing and fought tough right through to the last race of season. Along the way helped to propel Porsche to a Manufacturers’ Championship. He has logged several victories during his World Challenge career, which started in 1994, including Long Beach, Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca.

“World Challenge racing is a flat out race experience that provides a perfect proving ground for GMG products, cars and engineering,” notes Sofronas. “Unlike many other series where the race cars bear no resemblance to their road-going counter parts, World Challenge offers an opportunity to gain valuable data when developing the GMG line of performance parts and track packages for road cars.”

GMG will also field several other Porsches in the GT Class as well as the debut of North America’s only Audi R8 LMS GT3 for select races, which has been in development during the off-season. More details on GMG Racing’s expanded vehicle lineup are coming soon.

GMG Racing plans a full schedule of Pirelli World Challenge racing in 2012. The complete trio of cars and drivers will be on hand when the World Challenge season kicks off in St. Petersburg with a pair of races on Saturday, March 24 at 6pm eastern and Sunday, March 25, at 11am eastern, before the series moves into GMG Racing’s backyard for the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 15.

The opening weekend Pirelli World Challenge races in St. Petersburg will air on NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) plus will be streamed live online at www.world-challenge.com.

GMG Racing Overcomes Mechanical Challenges To Complete 12 Hours of Sebring in ALMS Season Opener

GMG Racing, the multi-series professional racing team and premier performance tuning facility for European vehicles in Southern California, pulled a 7th place finish in the GTC class at the crowded and challenging 60th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring to kick of the 2012 American Le Mans Series racing.

GMG Racing at the 2012 12 Hours of SebringThe team suffered a setback 3 hours into the race when the new No. 32 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup experienced a failed alternator and lost nearly a dozen laps before returning the car to race-ready condition.

“We came out of the pits way behind but very determined,” recalls GMG president, co-founder, and lead driver. “We made up several laps and were determined to run hard until the end, giving up was never an option. The team did a great job in the pits with zero mistakes all race long and I am very proud of them. Both Alex and Rene drove mistake free as that was our strategy.”

The team’s effort allowed the GMG squad to climb back to its 7th spot, surviving one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

The race marked the start of the fourth ALMS season for GMG Racing. Global Motorsports Group made its ALMS series debut with a driver lineup featuring Sofronas in the 2009 finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, finishing fifth in the Challenge class. GMG Racing contended its first full ALMS season in 2010 taking two podiums, and ran in a few 2011 races.

A duo of talented drivers joined Sofronas to keep this weekend’s race going until the end for GMG including Alex Welch, who debuted as part of the GMG Racing ALMS team in 2011, and seasoned racer Rene Villeneuve, who has been racing since 1987.

The next stop for 2012 Tequila Petron American Le Mans Series will be GMG Racing’s own backyard for the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 14.

GMG Racing Releases Video Profile of First Audi R8 LMS GT3 in North America

GMG Racing, the multi-series professional racing team and premier performance tuning facility for European vehicles in Southern California, has produced and posted an official video profile of the first Audi R8 LMS GT3 in North America. The just under 4 minute video includes in-car and on-car footage of this landmark vehicle during recent track testing at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in California.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tITJydxmSbA?rel=0]

Internally known as the Audi R16, the GMG Audi R8 LMS GT3 is one of the very few manufactured by Audi Sport. The vehicle was acquired from Phoenix Racing in Germany, fresh on the heels of the team winning the 2011 DTM championship and the 2012 Bathurst 12 Hour.

The Audi R8 LMS arrived in America in February as part of a newly-forged technical development partnership between Phoenix Racing and GMG Racing. It was immediately prepped by the GMG Racing engineering team for track testing.

The car features extensive carbon fiber design and a powerful V10 engine to push the approximately 2800 pound vehicle with 520+ HP through a sequential paddle shifter with a Formula racing configuration. The Audi R16 rides solid with an aluminum body and steel cage bolted to the reinforced chassis for safety and ultra-performance grade rigidity.

GMG will further enhance the vehicle for racing using the company’s experience and innovations. This will include implementing more carbon fiber for weight savings, utilizing GMG’s signature World Challenge components to upgrade the exhaust for more power, and developing suspension components for improved handling.

The No. 35 GMG 2012 Porsche GT3 Cup CarGMG Racing’s mainstay for IMSA racing, Brent Holden, returns for his sixth season with the team. Holden, who first connected with Global Motorsports Group (GMG) when he came into the shop to get harness seat belts for his road car and has been a die-hard racer ever since with multiple top 10 finishes, will pilot the No. 44 GMG Racing Porsche GT3 Cup car in the Platinum Class.

“Brent has a great knack for pushing himself and the car at the right times then pulling it back to hold onto his gains,” notes GMG President James Sofronas. Brent will run a limited schedule, making his 2012 debut later in the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge season.

GMG Racing’s newest and youngest driver, twenty-one year old racing sensation Bryce Miller, will anchor the team with a full schedule behind the wheel of the No. 35 GMG Racing 2012 Porsche GT3 Cup Car. GMG Racing returns to IMSA racing for a sixth year and brings unsurpassed experience and expertise with Porsche racing and performance across several race series including World Challenge and American LeMans.
